Inspiring Story of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam – The People’s President and the Dreamer of India
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s life is not just a story — it’s a journey that continues to inspire millions around the world. Known as the “Missile Man of India” and the “People’s President,” his story is one of humility, hard work, and the power of dreams.
Born on October 15, 1931, in the small town of Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Abdul Kalam came from a modest background. His father was a boatman and his mother a homemaker, yet their values of honesty, discipline, and kindness shaped Kalam’s character deeply. As a young boy, he sold newspapers to help his family, but what truly set him apart was his curiosity and love for learning.
Kalam’s fascination with science and flying led him to study aerospace engineering. His dedication and brilliance eventually took him to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he played a crucial role in developing India’s first satellite launch vehicle. Later, at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), he led several missile projects that earned him the title “Missile Man of India.”
One of his proudest moments came in 1998, when he guided India’s Pokhran-II nuclear tests, making the nation a global power. Yet, despite his enormous achievements, Dr. Kalam always remained humble. He often said,
“Dream is not what you see in sleep, it is the thing which doesn’t let you sleep.”
In 2002, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam became the 11th President of India. His warmth, simplicity, and dedication to the youth made him one of the most beloved leaders in the country’s history. Even after his presidency, he continued to inspire students across India, encouraging them to believe in their dreams and serve the nation with integrity.
Tragically, he passed away on July 27, 2015, while delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong — doing what he loved the most: inspiring young minds.
Dr. Kalam’s life teaches us that success doesn’t come from wealth or privilege but from determination, honesty, and an unshakable belief in one’s dreams. His legacy continues to live on in every student, every dreamer, and every Indian who believes in building a better tomorrow.
