Among those immortal heroes stands Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, a name that echoes in every Indian heart with pride and reverence. Born on March 15, 1977, in Kerala, Sandeep grew up with a dream to serve his country. He joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) and later became part of the 10 Para (Special Forces) before being commissioned into the 7th Battalion of the Bihar Regiment. From the very beginning, his courage, discipline, and leadership qualities stood out.
But it was during the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks in 2008 that the world witnessed his true heroism. When terrorists stormed the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Major Sandeep led his team of commandos to rescue hostages. Despite facing heavy gunfire, he continued to push forward, ensuring the safety of his men and civilians. His famous last words to his team — “Don’t come up, I’ll handle them,” — embody the soul of a true soldier.
He fought bravely till his last breath, eliminating multiple terrorists before sacrificing his life for the nation. His body was found with bullet wounds, a silent testament to his fearless fight.
